📊 Generating Backlinks Using Ads: The Experiment
A few months ago, in an attempt to explore the effectiveness of utilizing advertising campaigns for generating backlinks, I embarked on an experiment. The results were decent, but the flaws in my process were evident. Realizing the need for a more strategic approach, I reached out to my friend Josh, who manages Ahrefs' blog. Together, we devised a plan to create a new link-worthy page and document our journey as a case study to share with others. This three-part series aims to unveil the secrets of writing a blog post that genuinely generates links. In this first part, we will delve into the importance of content quality, the linkability of topics, and the role of timing in link building.
Part 1: The Importance of Content Quality
Throughout my video content creation and link building endeavors, I have focused extensively on the significance of content quality. It is a widely emphasized piece of advice, precisely because it holds true. An awesome piece of content is far more likely to attract backlinks than something mediocre. However, content quality is not the sole factor contributing to effective link building. There is another crucial element that often goes unnoticed—the linkability of the topic itself.
Part 2: The Linkable Topic
When crafting a blog post with the intent of generating links, it is essential to consider the searcher intent behind the topic. Why are people searching for this particular topic in the first place? To illustrate this point, let's take the example of a blog post targeting the query "best decaf coffee." The individuals typically interested in searching for such content are those who want to drink decaf coffee. While this topic may attract a substantial amount of traffic, it may not necessarily appeal to bloggers, journalists, or industry experts who possess the power to link to your page.
On the other hand, a topic like "coffee stats" is likely to captivate the attention of bloggers, journalists, and individuals seeking supporting facts to incorporate into their articles. Keywords such as "stats," "statistics," and "facts" are commonly employed when crafting content. Such pages tend to garner a significant number of backlinks as they serve as reliable sources for factual information. For instance, Nerdwallet's statistics page on average household credit card debt has amassed nearly 2,500 referring domains, while several "marriage statistics" pages have accumulated hundreds of referring domains.
Part 3: The Role of Timing
Content quality and linkable topics are undeniably crucial aspects of link building. However, even if you possess exceptional content, it may not translate into immediate links if it fails to reach the right audience at the right time. Timing plays an integral role in determining the success of your link acquisition efforts. Nail the timing, and your chances of securing backlinks increase exponentially.
In the subsequent parts of this series, we will explore each of these factors in greater detail. We will unveil the methodology behind finding proven and "link-worthy" topics, how to create engaging and well-organized stats pages, and the art of leveraging popular and up-to-date statistics to amplify link generation. Stay tuned for the next installments!
